Natural Split vs Honed vs Sandblasted: Choosing the Right Stone Finish
Por Technical & Quality Team · March 22, 2026 · 3 min de leitura
The same block of stone can look and perform in completely different ways depending on how its surface is finished. For specifiers, choosing the right finish is as important as choosing the right stone — it determines slip resistance, appearance, maintenance and cost. This guide compares the main natural stone finishes and where each performs best.
Why finish matters
A finish is the treatment applied to a stone's surface after cutting. It changes three things that matter to any project: texture (which drives slip resistance and feel underfoot), appearance (tone, sheen and how the natural colour reads), and maintenance (how easily the surface stays clean). Getting it right means matching the finish to the application, climate and traffic.
Natural split
Natural split leaves the stone with its riven, cleft surface — the most organic, textural option. It offers excellent grip and a rustic, three-dimensional character that suits stacked-stone cladding and pool coping where a natural look is wanted. Because it is textural, it hides minor wear well but can be slightly harder to clean than smooth finishes.
Best for: wall cladding, coping, feature walls, anywhere texture and grip are priorities.
Honed
Honing grinds the surface to a smooth, matte, satin finish without the reflectivity of polishing. It reads as refined and contemporary, deepens the stone's colour, and — in the case of Sukabumi green stone — is smooth yet still naturally non-slip enough for pool interiors. Honed surfaces are easy to clean, making them popular for interior floors and pool linings.
Best for: pool interiors and waterlines, interior floors, refined contemporary spaces.
Sandblasted
Sandblasting propels abrasive against the surface to create a fine, uniform texture that lightens the stone's tone. The result is a subtly grippy, matte surface that reflects heat — a major advantage for pool decks in hot, sunny climates where darker or smoother surfaces get uncomfortably hot underfoot. It offers reliable anti-slip performance without the coarseness of flaming.
Best for: pool decks, patios and exterior paving, especially in hot climates.
Flamed and bush-hammered
Flamed finishes use intense heat to fracture the surface crystals, producing a rough, highly slip-resistant texture ideal for heavy-duty exterior paving and high-traffic public areas. Bush-hammered uses a textured hammer head to create a pitted, grippy surface with a distinctive matte look. Both maximise slip resistance and durability at the cost of a coarser feel.
Best for: driveways, public plazas, steps, high-traffic exteriors.
Slip ratings: matching finish to safety
Slip resistance is often specified using ratings such as the R-scale (R9–R13) or pendulum test values. As a rule, texture increases slip resistance: honed sits lower, sandblasted mid-range, and flamed or bush-hammered highest. Around pools, specifiers typically target higher slip ratings on decks and coping than on submerged interior surfaces. Always confirm the required rating for your jurisdiction and request test data — which we provide per finish.
A practical selection matrix
| Application | Recommended finish |
|---|---|
| Pool interior / waterline | Honed |
| Pool coping | Natural split or sandblasted |
| Pool deck / patio | Sandblasted |
| Driveway / plaza | Flamed or bush-hammered |
| Interior floor | Honed |
| Wall cladding | Natural split |
Conclusion
There is no single "best" finish — only the right finish for the application. Match texture to slip requirements, tone to design intent, and always compare physical samples in the finish you intend to specify. We supply every finish across our range and send samples so you can decide with confidence.
